Financial Management 2 –Credit Awareness and Building a Financial Future
Continuing with FDIC’s Money Smarts for Adults curriculum and building off the concepts learned around saving and credit scores, Financial Management II will discuss borrowing and managing debt, using credit cards wisely, protecting your identity and other assets and building towards a financial future. This course will emphasize the importance of personal responsibility in managing finances and the lifelong benefits that result.
This 5-week-long curriculum will meet once a week for an hour, and the focus will be on life skills. There will be an opportunity to meet with the instructor one-on-one to review your credit report or benefits if desired.

Financial Management 2 – Credit Awareness and Building a Financial Future
Week 1: Disputing Errors in Your Credit Reports:
This class will instruct students on how to identify different types of errors on credit reports, and how to address inaccurate information. We will discuss how to dispute errors on credit reports. We will also discuss how to build, repair and maintain a productive credit history.
Week 2: Borrowing Basics and Managing Debt:
Using knowledge about credit scores and reports, this class will focus on borrowing basics, including the various ways to borrow money and what it really costs, types of loans, truth in lending and finance charges. In addition, we will discuss how to apply for a loan and factors lenders may use in their decision. We will also discuss managing and understanding how your debt works, how debt affects your financial situation, and strategies to reduce debt.
Week 3: Understanding High-Cost Debt including Credit Cards:
Our topic for week 3 is to understand high-cost debt including the different types of high-cost debt, how credit cards work and how to manage them. This includes understanding rates and fees, rewards, secured and unsecured cards and other important terms. We will discuss how to read and understand your statement. We will discuss steps to manage credit card debt to stay out of trouble. We will also discuss the nonpayment of debt and collections, student and medical debt and where to get help.
Week 4: Building your Financial Future
Week four is dedicated to learning about assets and how to create plans to build a solid financial future. We will learn about different types of assets; financial, physical and productive and the relationship between assets to equity and net worth. We will describe ways to afford assets and explore the value of productive assets such as education and reliable transportation. The basics of investing and important terms will be covered.
Week 5: Protecting your Identity and Other Assets:
The final class focuses on risk and how to reduce risks to your assets as well as identity theft and fraud. This will include warning signs of identity theft, steps to minimize it and how to report and get help. Finally, we will discuss how insurance works including different types of insurance, how to get insurance and keeping accurate records.
